Founded in 1867, Somma captures the essence of the most refined lifestyles. By blending luxury and comfort, it embodies the concept of ‘quiet luxury’ – a subtle elegance – across all its collections. Somma embodies the character of a production of excellence, with deep-rooted traditions linked to Italian craftsmanship and the concept of beauty. Versatile, high-end collections, designed to meet every need and to make every space unique in private residences, hotels, yachts and Spa.

Since 1867, Somma, has expressed a character of outstanding manufacturing excellence, linked to Italian sophistication. Defined by craftsmanship through constant innovation, since 1867, Somma continues to produce linens and textile accessories for a unique experience. We use the finest raw materials which are internally woven and finished with the utmost care to create refined and distinctive items, guaranteeing the highest quality standards.

To recount the heritage of Lanificio Somma – now known as Somma 1867, the flagship brand of the Gabel Group – is to embark on a journey through Italian textile excellence, combining textile manufacturing expertise with the style and craftsmanship of the real Made in Italy.

The Origins (1867): Ermanno Mosterts, whose family of Dutch origin arrived in Italy in the early 19th century, founded the wool mill in Milan (initially in Via Quadronno), before inextricably linking the factory’s name to the town of Somma Lombardo, where production grew and became legendary. Officials’ visit (1950s): Testimony to the company’s strategic importance for Italian industry is provided by a post-war newsreel from the Luce Historical

Archive, which documents the visit of the then Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, where he was welcomed by the workers and the Mosterts family.

Lanificio Somma has always focused on visual communication of the highest standard. The Italian Graphic Design Archive holds a famous advertising poster from 1960 created by the great photographer and designer Aldo Calabresi, who developed the mill’s corporate identity, highlighting its geometric elegance and the softness of the wool.

The acquisition by Gabel in the late 1980s and the relaunch of the wool mill with the addition of sateen and percale fabrics to complete the range.

The brand restyling (1997): To mark its 130th anniversary, the company decided to officially incorporate the date ‘1867’ into its historic elliptical logo, making its heritage the cornerstone of its visual identity in the world of luxury.

The scent of steam and raw wool. Anyone who passed through Somma Lombardo in the last century carries that memory with them: the steady rhythm of the looms, an industrial symphony that has marked the passing of time since as far back as 1867.

It all began with a vision of Ermanno Mosterts. He came from a family of Dutch origin who had found a new home and a promise in Italy. Ermanno did not just want to weave; he wanted to capture warmth. When he founded Somma, he chose to work with wool not as a mere raw material, but as a work of art.

The decades passed and the wool mill became a benchmark for the entire nation. In the post-war period, as Italy was rapidly getting back on its feet, even ministers of the Republic passed through the factory gates to admire that miracle of engineering and style.

In the 1960s, whilst the world was in turmoil and undergoing a transformation, Somma chose leading designers such as Aldo Calabresi to create the advertisements of the era: clean lines, perfect geometries, images that did not need to shout to demonstrate their nobility. Somma blankets and throws were no longer merely items for keeping warm, but symbols of a way of life that the whole world envied us for. They became the trimmings for special occasions, gifts passed down from mother to daughter, guardians of family histories ranging from those of royalty and the aristocracy to those of the new middle class.

Today, under the wing of the Gabel Group, that bond remains unbroken. The real revolution was a subtle insight, what we now call ‘quiet luxury’: the inclusion of the year of foundation to attest to a long history of craftsmanship.

If you look at the Somma logo, within its perfect ellipse, you will notice a proud date: 1867. More than a century and a half has passed since the first loom began to weave. The machinery has changed, the markets have crossed oceans, reaching from luxury yachts to the world’s most exclusive spas, hotels and private residences. Yet the promise remains the same as on the very first day: a thread stretched between the memory of yesterday and the beauty of tomorrow.

We take pride in creating our collections with the same care as over 150 years ago, overseeing each production stage directly and maintaining the same attention to detail, thanks to the mastery of our weavers and printers. All this is done with respect for the environment and our people. In our daily choices, we strive to reduce the impact of our production and are constantly working to add new international certifications to our supply chain.

We are driven by shared values, clearly defined in our Code of Ethics, which guides us and inspires us to pursue continuous improvement. Throughout our production processes, we pay the utmost attention to quality, ecosystem preservation, reduced consumption, energy efficiency, careful material selection, recycling, workplace safety, and social responsibility.

A distinctive feature of our manufacturing Group is the direct management of the entire production chain-from the purchase of the yarn to the final finishing, including design and style.

A system based on constantly updated, technologically advanced production processes, managed by a dynamic managerial and commercial structure.

This process is the result of the dedication of hundreds of collaborators working across two production units: weaving in the Valtellina region, just north of Como and printing, dyeing, finishing, logistics and offices at our headquarters in Lake Como.

The interior of a house. Its cozy beauty. The traditional Italian care for the fabrics in everyday life. From the world of fine fabrics and elegant towels to that of precious jacquard fabrics that our looms transform in unique designs up to elegant prints on precious pure cotton, Somma1867 collections range in the world of household linen, united by the common thread of continuous research of style. Our Product Development Teamis constantly engaged in studying new proposals, refined and unpublished to furnish the whole house.

The world of wool is constantly evolving and alongside the great classics of Somma, loved all over the world, there are throws and blankets with new colors, new combinations, new patterns.

We support the needs of our customers without compromising those of future generations. Our model is based on principles and criteria of increased social, environmental, and economic responsibility, all aimed at protecting the ecosystem. Within this framework, we made the conscious choice to maintain our entire production cycle in Italy in directly managed plants, with a dedicated team that follows each Somma1867 collection with a

tailor-made approach.
